Thrarin has one simple ability, he can jump into combat at any location. That may not seem like a lot, but it's incredibly useful, especially for what it costs. His Twilight Cost is only 1. Unlike Dwarven Guards you don't need to spot another Dwarf to play him, so he can go in any deck. He's not a Companion, so he doesn't generate Twilight every time your Fellowship moves. Essentially, he costs you 1 Twilight and 1 card. What do you get for that? A character you can throw in front of Cave Trolls, Witch Kings and other big Minions instead of sacrificing Companions. In that respect, it's a better Hobbit Stealth, since it can't be countered and it works at any site. Against smaller Minions, that one extra defender can prevent the opponent from assigning 2 Minions to your Frodo.

Is there a downside? He's only 4 Strength, so he will lose almost any skirmish he's in and that second wound will kill him. Since he's unique, it will take some effort to use him in two skirmishes. Being a Dwarf, there's plenty of ways to boost his Strength, and then he may live long enough for you to heal him. He may also survive if you use him at Site 3, where he doesn't have to Exert. (Strength of Spirit won't work - he's not a Companion.) Coincidentally, putting multiple copies of Thrarin in your deck not only gives you a way to heal him, it increases your odds of having him in play when you move to Site 3. But even if he's only useful once per game, it's still worth putting one copy in your deck.
